SUMMARY:Canto popolare e canzone abruzzese d’autore negli studi di Ottaviano Giannangeli (1923-2017)

SUMMARY:Popular Music and Translanguaging: Insights from Young Children's Music Making
DESCRIPTION:Childhood is marked by a vivid imaginative engagement with sound\, rhythm\, and movementthrough which children begin to communicate and make sense of their environment. Drawing onresearch on early musicality and language development\, this presentation explores therelationship between music\, multilingual development\, and translanguaging in early childhood.Because music and language development seems to be deeply intertwined in early childhooddevelopment\, playing with music can become crucial in supporting communication\, emotionalattunement\, and early linguistic development\, particularly for children growing up with morethan one language. Building on translanguaging theory\, in this presentation I consider whetherand how music can function as a translanguaging space in early childhood settings\, reflecting ondata from three early childhood contexts: multilingual music classes in a university setting and ina center for refugee and asylum seekers\; and interviews collected with Italian expatriate families.The aim is to illustrate how children and adults use singing\, chanting\, movement\, playfulvocalizations along with folk and current pop songs from their culture of origin to navigate andintegrate linguistic and cultural resources.Considering the contemporary musical landscapes\, shaped by globalization and digital media\, itis critical to analyze children's everyday musical experiences\, and understand how music maysupport the development of their identities as individuals navigating diverse linguistic andcultural environments. A comprehensive analysis of the most salient aspects involved in theconstruction of translanguaging musical spaces in early childhood contexts will serve todemonstrate how musical play enables young children\, along with the significant adults aroundthem\, to explore multiple languages\, exercise agency\, and participate actively in shared meaning-making practices. The presentation will further explore the role that popular music and culturallyrelevant songs play within the complex multilingual and multicultural contexts in which youngchildren are currently immersed.

SUMMARY:Intercultural exchange and sharing identities in music education
DESCRIPTION:The cultural diversity within schools makes the development of music teachers’ intercultural competence an increasingly relevant priority (Westerlund\, Karlsen\, & Partti\, 2020\; Cabedo-Mas\, 2015). From this perspective\, beginning with an analysis of the Italian context (Institutional programs and political expectations)\, the panel will focus on concrete experiences and initiatives in intercultural training within musical practice\, such as inviting foreign musicians to participate in teaching activities and in the creation of intercultural ensembles. Following an examination of an Italian intercultural teacher-training program\, we will move to international experiences\, within the broader framework of a world-education perspective (Biesta 2021).\n\n

SUMMARY:The Creative Expressive Method: the Art of Living with the Arts
DESCRIPTION:"The Art of Living with the Arts" is the ability to educate oneself by educating others\, to listen to oneself by listening to others\, to do in order to be. Schools and socio-educational environments in general need\, now more than ever\, to put people at the center of their educational project\, giving attention and presence to what children\, teenagers\, young people\, and adults bring into the relationship with themselves and with others. Didactics\, technology\, and education can never surpass human dimensions\; and it will be increasingly necessary for professionals in the helping relationship to support the individuals they care for by guiding them to observe themselves and to experiment with expressive and creative practices starting from the sensory\, emotional\, and relational dimensions. And this is easier and more effective if done through non-verbal languages - music\, theater\, visual arts\, body expression - which are the key to growing and helping others grow: if you are\, you know\; if you know\, you can be ... but it doesn't mean that you are!

SUMMARY:Pop Theory in Practice: Teaching the Building Blocks of Modern Hits
DESCRIPTION:Music theory was originally developed to describe and explain the Euroclassical repertoire. While its foundations remain essential\, relying on traditional theory alone to teach contemporary commercial songwriting and production is a bit like giving students an old map to navigate a city that has transformed. Drawing on systematic analysis of today’s chart-topping songs\, this session introduces frameworks that expand traditional theory to include the elements\, patterns\, and conventions that define today’s commercial music landscape.

SUMMARY:The Business of Songwriting: Teaching Creative Careers in the Modern Music Industry
DESCRIPTION:Today’s songwriters must navigate not only the musical aspect of the craft\, but also branding\, publishing\, intellectual property\, and digital distribution. For educators\, bridging these domains presents both a challenge and an opportunity: how can we teach students to sustain creative lives in an ever-evolving industry without sacrificing artistry?\n\nThis session examines “The Business of Songwriting\,” a pedagogical model that integrates career development and industry knowledge directly into creative coursework. Drawing from experience teaching this course at Berklee\, this session outlines a holistic approach to helping students understand their songs as both art and assets. It will explore strategies for encouraging entrepreneurial thinking that supports long-term creative practice.\n\nParticipants will receive adaptable lesson structures\, and reflection frameworks that can be implemented across educational settings. Discussion will include how to foster authentic artistic identity within commercial contexts\, how to teach collaboration as a professional skill\, and how to cultivate financial and creative sustainability.\n\nBy reimagining songwriting education through an integrated creative-business lens\, educators can empower emerging writers to build resilient\, self-sustaining careers grounded not only in musical excellence but in an understanding of how songs live\, move\, and earn in the world.

SUMMARY:Popular Music as Educational Nourishment? Tracing Historical Roots in Music Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Music pedagogy attributed educational value to widely shared musical practices. Popular music\, often learned within informal educational context\, played an important role in early musical development. However\, popular music was frequently neglected and marginalised in educational discourse. The paper aims to shed light on this phenomenon through an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of history and music education in the Italian context\, with particular focus on the pedagogical framework of the twentieth century.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:Constraint-Based Songwriting: Creativity Through Limits
DESCRIPTION:What happens when songwriters are asked to work within limits? Rather than restricting expression\, creative constraints can act as catalysts for discovery. In professional songwriting settings from co-writing sessions to industry briefs\, songwriters frequently work under specific parameters of style\, theme\, and form. Bringing those constraints into the classroom not only mirrors real-world practices but also offers powerful tools for cultivating creativity and confidence.\n\nThis session introduces the pedagogical framework of constraint-based songwriting as a means to jump-start creativity\, eliminate writer’s block\, and encourage craft development. Drawing from both artistic practice and classroom application\, this session will feature adaptable exercises that employ lyrical\, formal\, harmonic\, and production-based limitations.\n\nParticipants will experience how limitations can lead to freedom by redirecting focus toward process\, exploration\, and intention. The session positions constraint not as a barrier but as an essential structure that deepens expressive range. Attendees will leave with hands-on strategies\, adaptable prompts\, and a renewed understanding of how teaching “within the box” can open creative doors for both students and professionals alike.

SUMMARY:Music as an Educational and Social Infrastructure: from Città della Musica to Solidarity Couriers
DESCRIPTION:When does a place dedicated to music stop being just a commercial space and become a social infrastructure for the community?\nThis question gives shape to the story of Città della Musica\, a historic musical instrument store founded in 1871 and developed for generations by the family\, together with collaborators who have shared the same vision: to make music an experience capable of generating culture\, education\, relationships\, and wellbeing.\nThe story has its roots in the choice of a child who\, 155 years ago\, decided to follow his passion for music\, going against family expectations and against an environment that probably pointed him in a different direction. From that choice\, an organization was born that today is not only a store\, but a living\, cultural\, and social place.\nEvery day\, Città della Musica connects students\, teachers\, families\, musicians\, and schools. Through events\, performances\, educational collaborations\, and an internal stage dedicated to live music\, this space seeks to communicate the beauty of music and the wellbeing it can generate in people’s lives.\nThis cultural dimension is connected to Solidarity Couriers APS\, the association through which Città della Musica gives shape to its solidarity dimension. Through missions\, educational projects\, deliveries of school materials\, and initiatives supporting schools and communities in different countries around the world\, music becomes part of a broader vision of relationship\, care\, and social responsibility. \nThe project also encourages people to take part directly\, by traveling with us\, seeing the impact with their own eyes\, and becoming Solidarity Couriers themselves.\nThe future perspective is to transform this network of musicians\, teachers\, and relationships into a model of cultural cooperation: small music schools abroad\, training for local teachers\, in-person programs\, and remote support.\nThe audience will be invited to look at music not only as art\, commerce\, or entertainment\, but as a tool for education\, identity\, community\, wellbeing\, and social impact.\n\nComic about the history of Città della Musica\nIt tells the origin of our story\, born from the musical passion of a child and carried forward for generations until becoming today’s Città della Musica.\nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1tPkEKxH0sIH0X_1Pqz3WRpolLaFpJ_bi/view?usp=sharing\nRai 2 - TG2 feature on "TakeMeBack - Solidarity Couriers"\nA national television feature about the solidarity project through which we give shape to the social dimension connected to Città della Musica.\nhttps://youtu.be/NHRjyI3t3FU\nOfficial website of "Città della Musica"\nTo learn more about the store\, its history\, and its evolution as a musical\, cultural\, and educational place.\nhttps://www.cittadellamusica.store\nOfficial "TakeMeBack - Solidarity Couriers" website\nTo learn more about the solidarity missions\, educational projects\, and initiatives supporting schools and communities in different countries.\nhttps://www.takemeback.eu/\nSerendip trailer\nA documentary film born from the experience of Solidarity Couriers in Sri Lanka\, dedicated to travel\, human encounter\, and solidarity. SUMMARY:From the Levant to Lubbock Texas: Bridging Cultures through Music
DESCRIPTION:This presentation highlights the impact of an engaged scholarship initiative that brings Palestinian violist and composer Ramzi Aburedwan and his Dal’Ouna Ensemble to Texas Tech University for a week-long residency connecting students\, artists\, and the local Arab community through music of the Levant region. Building on successful residencies in 2018 and 2024\, the 2025 project expands the collaboration to include a research component designed to measure the impact of cross-cultural music-making on student learning\, community engagement\, and cultural perception.\n\nThrough lectures\, masterclasses\, collaborative composition\, and a culminating public concert\, undergraduate and high school students work alongside world-class musicians to explore Levantine/Mediterranean&nbsp\; popular music traditions that are underrepresented on American music programs. Participating students learned not only about musical systems and popular songs associated with the Medditerranean\, but also about the role of art in society and in culture creation. Surveys and qualitative reflections gathered from students and audience members assess how musical collaboration fosters empathy\, curiosity\, and intercultural understanding.\n\nOur findings suggest that experiential\, cross-cultural\, and collaborative encounters with global popular musics such as those presented by the Dal'Ouna ensemble can transform how students perceive both music and the world around them. The presentation situates this project within broader conversations about popular music education and global music traditions as well as how to incoporate these through education\, community engagement\, and musical performance. It offers a replicable model for how universities can partner with international artists\, students\, and local communities to bridge cultures\, strengthen community ties\, and foster cross-cultural understanding through music.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:From Galant Schema to Pop Hit: the Romanesca between Historical Tradition and Contemporary Popular Music
