From simple vocal fry to screams and growls, many singers are drawn to vocal distortion - but may struggle with where to start or how to do so safely. Inspired by my own journey as a rock singer as well as my college students' curiosity, I've created a two-pronged framework meant to support authentic and efficient sound-making. I will present the four tenets of: Non-violence, Higher Power, Emotional Driver, and Technique, and introduce the "illusion of inefficiency" for live performance. "Ecstatic Expressions" offers creative exercises to harness personal experience, invites the singer to observe their body's natural functions, and offers a pedagogical approach to the physical process of creating distorted sounds. Participants are invited to join in and make noise!
