This presentation explores how Middle Eastern music influenced medieval Europefollowing the 9th-century Arab invasion of Sicily, the Crusades and the commercialnetworks of the maritime republics. Focusing on the dances known as istampitte, in voguein the 1300 Florence, it examines their distinctive style, instrumental features, and MiddleEastern connections, highlighting how these exchanges contributed to shapingcompositional and instrumental practices in the Italian Ars Nova.
