About me
Hayley Thompson-King has been recognized on international stages for her powerful performances, and “explosive display of vocal prowess” (PopMatters). Described by Americana UK as “A voice that could do anything doing just what it wants,” Hayley’s vocal abilities range from the operatic to punk-inspired screams. This range is fully on display in her 2020 solo album Sororicide – produced by Sean Slade (Radiohead, Hole). With Slade’s mentorship and direction, Sororicide accommodates garage-rock and Americana with a nod to her classical roots in her experimental arrangements of Ravel's "Toi, le coeur de la rose" and Barber's "Must The Winter Come So Soon". In its review Newsweek observes, “In the vein of alt-classical song cycles and rock concept albums, her new work layers wide-reaching sonics with palpable psychodrama. At its core is the battle between an artist and the voice inside her head.” Hayley has performed at venues and festivals throughout the US and in Europe including Stockholm Americana Festival in Stockholm, Sweden, The Huntington Theatre and The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, Americana Fest in Nashville, Tennessee, and SXSW in Austin, Texas. Her music has received airplay on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country and Underground Garage stations and has been heard in film and television, including Marielle Heller’s Diary of a Teenage Girl and ABC’s Betrayal. Hayley is featured on a forthcoming album from guitarist Eric Hofbauer in which she gives voice to Hofbauer’s avant-garde arrangements of popular songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Peter Gabriel. Her lecture/recital, “Ecstatic Expressions” will be featured in several venues including the 2026 Boston NATS auditions. In this program, Hayley demonstrates some of the extended techniques she uses and discusses American institutions and movements that inspired them and other “non-singing” sounds. She is also actively presenting her cabaret show She Contains Multitudes which explores themes of peace and refuge and features music by Kurt Weill and others. When not performing, Hayley is deeply engaged with her work as an Associate Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and an Artist-Teacher of Voice in Jazz and Contemporary Music at Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, MA.
